Brief History of Department
The Department of Sociology of Tingkhong College was introduced in the year 1972 as Core Course and in the year 1991 as Honours Course. Sunit Gogoi (1972) was the founder teacher (Ho D) of the Sociology Department . He was followed by Jogneswar Gogoi as HoD. Another faculty member of the department was late Bhuban Ch. Handique(1986). Present faculty members of the department are Deepanjali Borah, Dr.Diganta kr. Gogoi and Rashmi Rekha Handique.
The Motto of the Department
The motto of the department is to impart theoretical knowledge regarding society as a whole and to study social life, social change and the causes and consequences of human behavior. Investigate structure of groups, organizations and societies, and how people interact within these contexts. Through Sociology, the department trains students to understand the basic social processes of society, social institutions and pattern of social behavior.
Programme-Specific Outcomes
The main subject-matter of Sociology is to study about the human society and human behaviour. The motto of the sociology department is to impart theoretical knowledge regarding development of sociology as an academic discipline and how over a period of time thinkers have conceptualized various aspects of society and draw attention to the key concepts and institutions of Indian society from an interdisciplinary perspectives , which are useful for the understanding of Indian society. Thus the course will provide knowledge to the students regarding major theoretical debates and concepts and linkage between social, political, economic and religion through themes such as power, governance, states etc. Thus students will able to learn the significance of sociological analysis for the studies of economic processes in local and global contexts. Social stratification is a key concepts of Indian society, through the course the students will be able to know about diverse forms of social inequalities. The students of both honours and non- honours will be able to learn the methodologies of social research through the course “Sociological Research Methods” which are more needful for research work and career development of the students.
Course-Specific Objectives
1st Semester
Core Course 01: Introduction to Sociology I (6 Credit)
Through this course, students will be able to know about the sociological way of thinking. It also provides a foundation for the other more detailed and specialized courses in sociology.
Core Course 02: Sociology of India I (6 Credit)
Students will be introduced the processes and modes of construction of knowledge of India aims to draw attention to the concepts and institutions which are useful for the understanding of Indian society.
Generic Elective 01: Indian Society: Images and Reality (6 Credit)
The course seeks to provide an interdisciplinary introduction to Indian society.
2nd Semester
Core Course 03: Introduction to Sociology II (6 Credit)
Students will be able to gain knowledge regarding general introduction to sociological thought. It also aims to draw attention to the variety of ideas and debates about Indian society.
Core Course 04: Sociology of India II(6 Credit)
The course focus on multiple socio-political forces and ideologies which shape the terrain of the nation which will help the students to know about Indian society.
Generic Elective 02: Family and Intimacy (6 Credit)
The course attempts to introduce students about the social institution from the sociological perspective and with an interdisciplinary orientation.
3rd Semester
Core Course 05: Political Sociology (6 Credit)
This course introduces the students to some major theoretical debates and concepts in political sociology.
Core Course 06: Sociology of Religion (6 Credit)
In this course students will be introduced about religious system and its impact over individual religion .It also focus on the relationships between socio-economic action and religion.
Core Course 07: Sociology of Gender (6 Credit)
In this course students will be introduced gender as a critical sociological lens of enquiry in relation to various social fields. It also interrogates the categories of gender, sex and sexuality.
Generic Elective: 03 Rethinking Development (6 Credit)
It introduces the students the ideas of development from a sociological perspective. It will also help the students to know about different approaches from an interdisciplinary perspective.
3rd Sem. Non-honours
Core Course 03: Social Stratification (6 Credit)
The course introduces the student to various ideas of social inequality and their sociological study. So students will be able to acquire knowledge regarding Social differentiation, social inequality etc.
4th Semester
Core Course 08; Economic Sociology (6 credit )
By going through this paper students will learn regarding understanding of the social and cultural bases of economic activity. It highlights the significance of sociological analysis for the study of economic processes in local and global contexts.
Core course 09: Sociology of Kinship (6 credit)
Through this paper students will be introduced about general principles of kinship and marriage by reference to key terms and theoretical statements substantiated by ethnographies.
Core course 10: Social Stratification (6 Credit)
Through this course students will be introduced to sociological study of social inequalities.
Generic Elective 04: Gender and Violence (6 Credit)
The main objective of this course is to provide an understanding of the logic of gender violence, awareness of its most common forms and tries to equip the students with a sociologically oriented perspectives.
4th Semester Non honours
Sociology Core: 4: Methods of Sociological Enquiry
The course is a general introduction to the methodologies of sociological research which will help the students of Non-Honours Course to doing a research work by educating them in research methodologies.
5th Semester
Core Course 11: Sociological Thinkers I (6 Credit )
The course introduces the students to the classics in the making of the discipline of Sociology through selected texts by the major thinkers through which students will be able to get Knowledge regarding the contributions of social thinkers towards the history and the development of Sociology.
Core Course 12: Sociological Research Methods I( 6 Credit )
The course is a general introduction to the methodologies of sociological research methods. It will provide the student with some elementary knowledge regarding sociological research.
DSE Course 02: Agrarian Sociology (6 th Credit)
This course will explores the traditions of enquiry and key substantive issues in agrarian Sociology.
DSE Course 04 : Sociology of Work (6 credits)
The paper willa provide an outline as how values and ideals of pluralized industrialism have caused an absorbed multiple transformative shifts to the local and global contemporary social networks of the contemporary world.
Non Honours
DSE 01 :Religion and Society in India 01 : (6 Credit )
Students will be introduced about Indian politics from a sociological perspective. It attempt to give the students theories, categories and conceptual tools to understand politics in relation to society in general.
6th Semester
Core Course 13: Sociological Thinkers II (Credit 6)
Main objective of this paper is to introduce students to post classical sociological
thinking through some original texts.
Core Course 14: Sociological research Method II (6 Credit)
By going through this paper students will able to know how research is actually done. Besides they will be able to know regarding formulating research design, method of data collection and data analysis.
DSE Course 06: Indian Sociological Tradition (6 Credit)
Through this paper students will be able to know about Indian traditional society and Indian civilization and how the Indian founder sociologists have been engaged with issues of tradition and modernity, caste tribe and gender and other issues.
Non Honours
DSE- 03: Social Stratification
Here students will be introduced about various ideas of social inequality and their sociological study both theoretically and through case studies.

30. Seminar/ Group Discussion/ Orientation Programme
The faculty members of the Sociology Department have been conducting Departmental Seminar, Group Discussion and Workshop to impart theoretical and practical knowledge of the students of every semester since 2011. The department also conducted many orientation programmes for the benefits of the students such as on 3rd November, 2014, an orientation programme was organized on the topic “Society and Social Development”. Trailukya Dehingia , Associate Professor, Khuwang College was attended as the Resource Person .
Another Orientation Programme was organized on 28-06-2018 on the topic “Career Opportunities of SociologY’’ .Dr.Bikash Deka, Associate Professor of Sociology Department , Dibrugarh University and Dr. Dipankar Sharmah Assistant Professor, Dept. of Sociology, Monuhari Devi Kanoi College Dibrugarh were attended as the Resource Persons.

Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and Extension activities: The students and the faculty members regularly participate in the activities of Social Responsibility and Extension organized by the college NSS Unit, IQAC, Green Audit Cell, Red Ribbon Club, etc. A village called No. 2 Bangali Tipomia has been adopted by the college and a socio-economic survey of the said village has been conducted by the Department of Sociology in the month of August, 2014.
36. SWOC analysis of the department and future plans:
Strength: A group of dedicated and hardworking teachers. Increasing rate of pass percentage in the final Examinations.
Weakness: Insufficient teaching staff, study materials, audio-visual teaching aids, inferiority complex of the students and insufficient classroom.
Opportunities: Ready to start the distance mode of PG course in Sociology.
Challenges: To develop the infrastructural facilities of the department. To motivate students to prepare themselves for higher studies.
37. Departmental Library
Besides central library, there is a departmental library which was started in the year 1990 to fulfill the need of the students coming from poor family. At present there are 286 copies book in the departmental library.
38. Book Donation Camp
A “Book Donation Camp’’ was started in the year 2013. Outgoing students of the department donate books to the departmental library at the end of their 6th semester examination.
39. Departmental Magazine
The first Departmental Magazine ‘PROGYA’ was published in the year 2015. Bhaskar Boruah was the editor of the first edition. Second edition of the publication will be published in the year 2022.
40. National Seminar
The Sociology Department organized an ICSSR(New Delhi) sponsored National Seminar on 19th and 20th February,2021 on the topic “ Development of Weaker Sections in North East India : Issues and Challenges” .Dr. Diganta kr. Gogoi , Dept. of Sociology was the Co-ordinator of the Organizing committee.
